Summary

The Electrical & Controls Engineering Manager leads a team of engineers responsible for the design, programming, integration, and commissioning of electrical and automation systems. This role ensures technical excellence and timely project delivery through effective resource management, contractor oversight, and coordination with stakeholders. The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership skills and hands-on experience with schematic design, power systems, PLC programming, safety system integration, and managing third-party contractors. Duties & Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing electrical and controls engineering team. 
  • Conduct performance reviews, manage resource allocation, and identify training needs. 
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and professional development. 
  • Promote accountability, cross-training, and standardization. 

Engineering Oversight

  • Responsible for the electrical design packages including schematics, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams. 
  • Responsible for the creation of power distribution design, motor controls, and machine safety system integration. 
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., NEC, NFPA 70E, UL508A). 
  • Manage project deliverables including BOMs, installation drawings, and redlines. 

Automation & Programming

  • Supervise PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming performed by internal staff or external integrators. 
  • Create functional descriptions, controls narratives, and I/O documentation. 
  • Provide guidance on programming standards and support field commissioning as needed. 
  • Step in to support critical technical work when necessary. 

Contractor & Vendor Coordination

  • Develop complete Request for Proposal (RFP) packages for electrical and automation scopes. 
  • Write and manage bid documents, evaluate contractor proposals, and make award recommendations. 
  • Oversee the performance of electrical contractors and controls system integrators, ensuring adherence to project scope, timeline, and quality expectations. 
  • Serve as primary liaison for contractor coordination during installation, testing, and startup. 

Project & Client Support

  • Collaborate with project managers, mechanical engineers, and vendors to deliver integrated solutions. 
  • Support cost estimating and proposal development for automation and installation scopes. 
  • Participate in client meetings and site reviews to align technical expectations. 

Process Improvements & Standards

  • Develop and maintain internal electrical and controls standards and best practices. 
  • Lead design reviews and technical audits to drive continuous improvement. 
  • Identify opportunities to streamline design, improve field execution, and enhance system performance. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct and mentor engineers, designers, and support staff. 
  • Manage workload distribution and provide strategic direction to ensure on-time project execution. 
  • Resolve conflicts, foster collaboration, and create a strong team culture. 
  • Promote safety, quality, and innovation in all aspects of team performance. 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • May require extended hours or weekend work depending on project timelines. 
  • Travel to client facilities, job sites, and vendor locations is required. 
  • Ability to conduct on-site evaluations, participate in commissioning, and lead contractor coordination. 
  • Safety training and PPE provided for field work. 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field (required). 
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience, including 2+ years leading engineering teams. 
  • Strong background in industrial automation, electrical construction, and system integration. 
  • Experience working directly with electrical contractors and controls integrators. 

Skills & Competencies

  • Expertise in electrical design, PLC/HMI programming (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.), and safety systems. 
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office tools. 
  • Strong project management, communication, and coordination skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage RFPs, bid packages, and contractor performance. 
  • In-depth knowledge of UL, NEC, NFPA, and OSHA requirements. 

Certifications & Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License (required). 
  • Ability to obtain a passport for international travel if required. 
  • PMP or equivalent project management certification a plus.
